My favourite form of exercise by far is Step Aerobics. Step aerobics is done on a platform where you step up and down to the beat of music. It is recommended that you do not exceed 128 BPM as this can cause injury. Sometimes people want to go faster to get a better workout. It is actually more important to execute and complete the moves properly rather than speeding up the tempo and rushing through chaotically. This ensures both toning of the muscles as well as a great cardiovascular workout. The platforms are usually from 6 to 10 inches. For a better workout if you are in good physical condition choose the higher platform. Step1
The thing I love about Step Aerobics is the thought that goes into the routines. I find that mindlessly running on a treadmill or working out on a cross trainer (which can get quite monotonous) lets your mind wonder and contemplate the worries in your life, like unpaid bills, the amount of housework you need to do that evening or the argument you had a work that day. Because Step involves a dance-like routine which involves around 2-3 parts of a 16 beat sequence, you have to concentrate and focus on what the instructor is saying. It completely removes you from the grind of everyday life and takes you to a completely different place where the only thing that matters is remembering the routine and getting it right!
The one thing I will say about Step Aerobics is that it is not for everyone. In my experience, you need to have good co-ordination and rhythm to be good at it and to keep up. I have always loved dancing and have always had very good co-ordination. I have therefore been able to build up my level of Step from Beginners to Advanced, becoming familiar with a whole range of moves, including the repeater-knee, mambo cha cha cha and the stomp. However, I have seen people in the class with blatantly no sense of rhythm or co-ordination at all. They are always the ones who set up at the back of the room, look completely lost throughout the class and invariably leave the room half way through. So no, Step is not for everyone.
Step3sOne thing I will say, however, is that if you love dancing, if you have good rhythm and you have good co-ordination skills, give Step Aerobics a try. You also tend to find that the same people go to the class every week, so it can be a great social event and I personally have made some very close friends just through doing something I love!
I do truly love Step Aerobics with a passion and am very lucky to have found a great instructor who’s class I attend every Thursday evening. Not only do you get a great workout, you also leave the room feeling an amazing sense of achievement, having conquered yet another mind-boggling routine. So if you like a good workout, check out your local Step class. You never know….you too may find a new love!
